Play the Game 2015

Dear colleagues

The winds of change are sweeping with unseen force through international sport today. Global events are facing skepticism, rejection or revolt. Competitions are watched with suspicions of doping or manipulation. Leaders of sport are seen as corrupt, even in cases where they are not. And in everyday life, millions of people turn their backs on the sports clubs in order to pursue their desire for play and physical activity in parks, private gyms or other settings far from traditional sport.
An increasingly impatient world public demands more transparency, more democracy, more accountability and more sustainability from the international sports organisations.
But is sport able to change from within? If not, how long is the outside world ready to wait?
Play the Game 2015 invites academics, journalists, sports officials and other stakeholders to discuss strategies that can address the multiple challenges inherent to modern sport: Match-fixing, doping, corruption, trafficking, exploitation and sedentary lifestyles, just to mention a few.
We invite you to contribute with your data, experience and opinions at Play the Game 2015 from 25-29 October in Aarhus, Denmark.
Play the Game 2015 addresses a number of current topics under the following headlines:

· The revolt against global events: A perfect storm for sport?

· Governments vs. fixers: Will the rule of law beat the law of the jungle?

· Good governance in sport: Setting standards, raising bars

· A new World Code against doping: Anybody willing to comply?

· The deadly disease of inactivity: Is the world ready for a cure?

· Transfers and trafficking: The human cost of broken dreams

· College sport in the USA: Unprotected amateurs in a billion-dollar business
An Open Forum is also available to speakers:

· who address issues not covered by the main themes

· whose abstracts are not accepted in the peer review process

· who offer interventions/investigations of a more personal character

· who submit last-minute registrations

· In the Open Forum, speakers are given a seven minute timeslot to present their main points.

Power and Corruption: Sporting Mega-Events, International Sports Organisations and the Future of Sport

One-day Workshop
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom
Call for Participation:
In September 2014, Inter-Disciplinary.Net’s Sport project held its first Olympics workshop. On 14 July 2015, the project will run a second Olympics workshop that extends the focus to writers, campaigners, practitioners and academics interested in discussing their work on sporting mega-events and international sports organisations more broadly. The explicitly inter-disciplinary scope of the workshop is primed to examine issues arising out of the Olympics and its relationship to the IOC, the World Cup and its relationship to FIFA and any sport event and organisation that operates a global, professional and commercial. We are interested in the Olympics and the IOC, the World Cup and FIFA, but also any sport events and organisations that operate on a global, professional, commercial scale.

The workshop is a space to share work, grapple with ideas and ask questions. Discussions will be driven by two key questions: how does power corrupt international sport and sports mega-events? And how can modern, international sport reform itself? In order to generate a lively, inter-disciplinary dialogue, we welcome the submission of proposals and expressions of interests from people who are working across the subject fields of history, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, leisure studies, ethics, theology, sports pedagogy, media studies, law, political studies and policy. We are especially keen to involve people involved in sports organisations, sports law, sport psychology, representatives of individual athletes, journalists and other professionals from outside academia, who can provide alternative voices and narratives. Submissions may deal with any aspect of:

- The Professionalization and Commercialization of Sports Governance
- The Globalization of Sports
- The Politics of Sports Mega-Events
- The Ethics of Sports Mega-Events

We invite expressions of interest for people thinking of attending and for them to send a statement of their interest and experience/expertise to the organising chairs by Friday 1st May 2015:

Karl Spraklen: .

Schedule:
The day will begin with registration between 8.30 am and 9.30am Tuesday 14th July 2015 and will be followed by a series of presentation sessions and workshops. PhD Studentship in Sport and Citizenship: Sexualities in Sport

Following the establishment of a ‘mini Centre for Doctoral Training’ (mini-CDT) in Sport and Citizenship at Loughborough University, applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the University’s Graduate School to start on October 1st2015. The Sport and Citizenship mini-CDT is a joint initiative of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and the School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences. This mini-CDT seeks to research the diverse ways in which active citizenship is pursued by different individuals and social groups in and through sport.

Sports provide a crucial social field in which recognition and citizenship are pursued by diverse social organizations, actors and groups, notably along the lines of class, gender, ethnicity, region or nationality, and sexuality. This PhD studentship focuses on sexuality in sport and will examine the role of key stakeholders - notably fans, sports officials, clubs and administrators, non-governmental organizations, and pressure groups - with regards to the extent of discrimination, intolerance and prejudice. At the level of policy, sports such as football have recognized these struggles: for example, in its Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Action Plan, the English Football Association outlined a strategy ‘for addressing incidents of discrimination in English football and encouraging greater inclusion across the game’; likewise, the governing body of European football, UEFA, argues that social responsibility is a key tenet of its anti-discrimination strategy. Despite these policies, however, there is evidence to suggest that forms of exclusion, discrimination and intolerance continue to undermine the full recognition and participation of the LGBT community. The PhD study will substantially advance our knowledge of the politics of citizenship within sport and will benefit substantially from our external links with Stonewall as the non-academic project partner. Moreover, the study will facilitate deeper understandings of the role of sport and other fields of popular culture in shaping the wider politics of citizenship; of the roles of different political and social actors in shaping citizenship struggles; and, of how citizenship struggles over sexuality are occurring in contemporary society.

The studentship is for 3 years and is intended to start on October 1http://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/finance/research/ st2015. The studentship provides a tax-free stipend of £13,863 per annum, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, for the duration of the studentship. International (non-EU) students may apply for this studentship, but will need to find the difference in fees between those for a ‘UK/EU’ and ‘international’ student themselves. For more information on fees, please see:

Applicants will normally need to hold at least an upper 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a social science discipline. A relevant Master’s degree in the social sciences and/or experience in this area will be an advantage. Issued October 2014

General information about the school of Social Sciences can be found at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/socialsciences/

2nd CALL FOR PAPERS: Philosophy at Play Conference, University of Gloucestershire

by Malcolm MacLean

Following two successful Philosophy at Play conferences, we are pleased to announce the third biennial conference to be held at University of Gloucestershire, UK on 9 and 10 June 2015. A book, arising from papers presented at the 2013 event is to be published in time to be launched at the conference.

The two previous conferences and ensuing publications have opened up dialogue and paradigmatic bridge building between scholars of play and philosophers. This dialogue has extended taken-for-granted concepts of play as the innocent frolicking of children to more complex and challenging areas including aesthetics; alternative and virtual worlds; ideas of evil, of politics, of ethics and productive and non-productive labour. This conference hopes to continue this epistemological and paradigmatic bridge-building. We therefore seek proposals for papers to be presented at the conference. The Academic Committee will consider all proposals and are particularly interested in the following topics:

  • The presence of play in the work of particular philosophers ancient, modern and contemporary
  • Play, the arts and aesthetic practice
  • Play and gaming
  • Play and sport
  • Philosophical perspectives on play/playing, including ethics, morality, aesthetics, ontology, epistemology, political philosophy
  • Play, power, freedom and ideology
  • Philosophy as play/play as philosophy
  • Play, space and time
  • The dialectics of play
  • Philosophy and playwork
  • Play and pleasure
  • Infant, childhood, adolescent, adult and senescent playing
  • Animal play
  • Play and spirituality
  • The world at play and the play of things: posthuman perspectives and materialism

Proposals should be submitted to by 26 February 2015 and should be approximately 400 words in English. The conference language will be English. The Academic Committee will review proposals during December and aims to advise of acceptance or otherwise by the middle of January. Those presenting papers will be eligible for the early bird conference fee.

Further details, including registration, of the conference can be found at: http://insight.glos.ac.uk/faculties/as/latest_news_events/Pages/PhilosophyPlayConference.aspx.

CFP: East-African Athletics & Social Sciences International Conference

by Heather Dichter

East-African Athletics & Social Sciences International Conference
June 29 - July 1, 2015
Dept of Sport Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia

Call for Communications

Although thoroughly studied by live science specialists for the last three decades, East-African athletics has seldom caught attention of social and human scientists. In the meantime, the running phenomenon has locally reached an unprecedented level of development in some areas of Kenya and Ethiopia and is now affecting numerous sectors of social life: economic development, domestic and international migrations, development of sport activities and infrastructures, inter alia. In the regions touched by this phenomenon, gender issues and participation of disabled people have also raised as relevant topics of interest. Studying East-African runners under the social science perspective also represents a break with the tradition of reducing them to their biology (genetics) or their environment (altitude), opening a new field of research on the social determinants of their performances.

Considering that the social sciences, namely history, sociology, anthropology, psychology, economy, political science, etc.have not yet been enough mobilized to study this field of activity and the numerous nexus between athletics and society, the 29th, 30th June and 1st July conference in the Addis Ababa University intends to give the opportunity to junior and senior scientists from either sport sciences or social and human sciences to present communications on any subject related to East-African athletics. Non-academic specialists of East-African athletics are also invited to submit applications, as well of specialists of athletics (especially running) in other parts of the world.

The communications are expected to present research works based on empirical and/or first-hand data. Applications will be assessed by an international scientific committee co-chaired by Dr. Manuel Schotté (Univ. Lille, France) and Dr. Bezabeh Wolde (AAU Sp Sc Dept) and composed of senior scholars with competences in either East-African studies or social and human sciences applied to sport. A selection of the best communications will be published in a collective book.

Communications will last 20 minutes, plus a 10 minute discussion session with audience. Topics to be addressed include, but are not restricted to:
-Athletics and Migrations
-Athletics and Gender
-Athletics-Generated Local Economic Development
-Athletics Institutions and Networks
-Sporting Socialization of Runners
-Athletics and Discriminations
-Psychology and Athletics
-Athletics and Disabilities
-Ethnography of Running
-Local Somatic Cultures and Athletics
-History of East-African Athletics
-Side topics: Running from other parts of the world, others disciplines of East-African athletics (field events), communications from sciences other than social sciences.

Proposals of communication should be submitted in English, on a maximum one page document, by email to and should include the following items: name and affiliation of the applicant, 3 to 5 keywords, title of the communication, abstract of the communication and type of data collected. Communicants employed by or registered in an African institution of higher education are eligible, under conditions, to reimbursement of their airplane ticket to and from Addis Ababa. Women are encouraged to apply.

Deadline for application: January 15, 2015.

Organizing Committee: Dr. Solomon Teka (AAU Sp. Sc Dept), Dr. Bezabeh Wolde (AAU Sp Sc Dept), Dr. Tesfaye Asgedom (AAU Sp Sc Dept), Dr. Benoit Gaudin (IRD-AAU Sp Sc Dept) and Onesmos Amberas (AAU Int Rel).

4th Annual Rockford University Sports Studies Symposium
Date: April 24, 2015

Along with its general popularity, sport as an object of academic study has been steadily growing for decades across disciplinary boundaries. As such, this year’s Sports Studies Symposium seeks to explore the state of the study of sport.

We invite papers that examine the current state of the study of sport; for example:

  • High-level descriptions of the current methodologies in a specific discipline as it relates to sport;
    • Analyses of the main active questions on which a specific discipline focuses when looking at sport;
    • Discussions of cross-disciplinary research or approaches to the study of sport.
    • Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list; a myriad of approaches are welcome and encouraged.

We invite and encourage contributors from any discipline.

Each presenter should plan on 20 minutes for his or her presentation. There will also be time for Q&A.

Abstract Submission:
Abstract should be 300-500 words. Send via email (as PDF) to sklein_at_rockford_dot_edu.

CFP: Sport and Diplomacy: Message, Mode and Metaphor? SOAS, University of London

Call for Papers

Sport and Diplomacy: Message, Mode and Metaphor?

Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, SOAS, University of London

3-4 July 2015

Hosted by Dr J Simon Rofe (SOAS, University of London)

Keynote Presentation by Professor Alan Tomlinson (University of Brighton) author of “FIFA – The Men, The Myths and the Money” (Routledge 2014).

As an enduring and almost ubiquitous part of modern life, sport has a powerful capacity to touch individuals and societies around the world in ways that traditional forms of diplomacy and diplomats rarely can. Sporting competition always carries social and political messages for these audiences; at times these are simple even vulgar, at times complex, subtle and mixed. Sport’s modes of operation - not only as participation and mass entertainment, but as an increasingly global business generating economic benefits for and linkages between a broad range of actors – have deep consequences for the ambitions, practices and outcomes of diplomacy. Sport is also a metaphor for competing identities within polities at all levels. Nowhere has the diffusion and redistribution of political and economic power in our globalizing world had more visibility than in international sport.

After many years of relative neglect, the realm of sport diplomacy is attracting renewed scholarly attention. The colloquium is deliberately aimed at welcoming colleagues and students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.

The colloquium has the broad aim to explore the relationship between sport and diplomacy at all levels. It does so under the following suggested themes (other suggestions are welcome):

  • Sport and Conflict & Conflict Resolution
  • Sport and Non-State Actors
  • International Organisations and Sporting Federations
  • Sport, Development and Diplomacy
  • International Sport, Money and Global Media

The leading papers from the colloquium will be published in a Special Edition of Diplomacy and Statecraft in 2016.

The deadline for paper proposals of no more than 400 words is January 16, 2014.

There will be NO registration fees for the invited presenters and a limited amount of funding will be provided also to cover travel and accommodation. Food and incidentals will be provided throughout the event.

Please send all proposals, and any queries, to Dr J Simon Rofe at

Subject to confirmation

Lords: The Home of Cricket. Sunday, July 5 – A trip for interested participants will be organised to Lords Cricket Ground to visit the ground in its 201st year of operation and the MCC Museum; also, subject to fixtures (and the weather), to enjoy some play.

The colloquium will be hosted by Global Diplomacy students from the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS, University of London, who will be welcome delegates to the colloquium, and all discussions will be made available to students as podcasts.

CFP: Philosophy at Play 3

Following two successful Philosophy at Play conferences, we are pleased to announce the third biennial conference to be held at University of Gloucestershire, UK on 9 and 10 June 2015. A book, arising from papers presented at the 2013 event is to be published in time to be launched at the conference.

Call for Papers

Proposals should be submitted to by Monday 1 December 2014 and should be approximately 400 words in English. The conference language will be English. The Academic Committee will review proposals during December and aims to advise of acceptance or otherwise by the middle of January. Those presenting papers will be eligible for the early bird conference fee.

Further details of the conference will be provided at a later date. https://www.facebook.com/events/1484262871856953

SportsPRSummit Twitter Chat this Monday, Nov 3, 8-9 p.m. EST (and seeking guest for The Classroom on Saturday)

The Sports PR Summit (@SportsPRSummit), in partnership with the Marist College Center for Sports Communication, will moderate its first monthly Twitter chat on Monday, November 3, from 8 to 9 p.m. EST under the hashtag #SportsPRSummit. These chats, scheduled for the first Monday of each month, will offer a platform for professionals working in and around the sports PR industry to weigh in on topical issues and offer insight and opinions. The discussions will help bring executive, junior, and academic voices together for meaningful dialogue and to address best industry practices, highlight exemplars in the field, and deliberate current dilemmas and opportunities encountered by those in the sports PR field.

Student interns from the Center will moderate the chats, and some top industry leaders in sports public relations (including several from the Sports PR Summit’s advisory board) will be participating. Certainly, we’d love to have your input and voices, as this represents a great opportunity for academics and industry folks to interact on topics in our field. Please let any interested students know about it as well. We’ll be tweeting questions from @SportsPRSummit with the hashtag #SportsPRSummit.

Call for Papers: Sport and Discrimination

by John Price

CALL FOR PAPERS
Sport and Discrimination Conference
Friday 1 May 2015
A one day conference to be held at University of Sunderland, London Campus

Confirmed Keynote Speakers:
Dr Daniel Burdsey, University of Brighton
Dr Jayne Caudwell, University of Brighton

Deadline for the submission of proposals: 1 December 2014

Prime Minister David Cameron recently concluded a Downing Street summit on discrimination in football by saying: ‘If everyone plays their role, then we can easily crush and deal with this problem’. Was this simply political spin, or a naïve assessment of the problem?

For as we write this, the Chief Executive of UK football’s Premier League has been in the headlines for sending sexist emails. The case provides a stark and public reminder of how discrimination remains embedded in the heart of sport today.

Consider the facts:

  • More than two-thirds of women in football have experienced sexism in the workplace (Women in Football).
  • Only seven percent of women with disabilities exercise regularly or participate in sport (RightToPLay).
  • Seven out of 10 football fans have witnessed homophobic abuse (YouGov).
  • Hundreds of elite athletes are suffering depression in silence (Black Dog Institute).
  • African Americans face exclusion from Major League Baseball (MLB) due to socioeconomic constraints, among other barriers (Bailey and Shepherd 2011).
  • Racism towards indigenous Australians is almost a weekly occurrence in Aussie Rules Football (Klugman and Osmond 2013).

The Sport and Discrimination Conference 2015 will provide a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary examination of these issues. It aims to explore different forms of discrimination (abuse, stereotyping, prejudice, harassment, exclusion), across a range of sports, drawing on work from a variety of academic fields (including sociology, sports studies, psychology, politics, history, and media and cultural studies).

What is the nature and extent of discrimination in sport today? How does it affect people’s experience of sport and their wider lives? What are the barriers to change? And how can discrimination best be tackled in the future?

We welcome proposals from academics, postgraduates and policy makers, who wish to present papers making empirical, theoretical or personal contributions. Proposals may approach the conference theme from a variety of perspectives, including:

  • Empirical findings about the nature and extent of discrimination in sport.
  • Research articulating the experiences of those who have suffered discrimination in sport.
  • Contributions adding to the theoretical understanding of sport and discrimination.
  • Policy recommendations for tackling and reducing discrimination in sport.

Proposals, for 20 minute presentations, should include title, abstract (250 words), the name and institutional affiliation of the presenter and a concise biography (100 words). The submission deadline is 1 December 2014.

The conference organisers plan to compile an edited book, titled Sport and Discrimination, from the best contributions to the conference and have an expression of interest from a leading academic publisher. Please indicate with your submission whether you wish to be considered for inclusion in this publication.

All submissions and enquiries should be sent to:

and/or our new academic conference admin officer

The conference is hosted by the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies, University of Sunderland, and organised by:

2nd Paper session CFP (women’s sports)

The Southern Sociological Society is organizing their 2015 annual conference in New Orleans around the theme of ?Stalled Revolutions? Gender Inequality in the 21st Century? with the question mark specifically indicating recognition that it is debatable whether or not the gender revolution has stalled at all and, if so, to what degree.

In conjunction with the conference theme, I am currently devising a session on ?sport and stalled revolutions?. The description of the session is as follows:

SPORT AND STALLED REVOLUTIONS 1: WOMEN?S SPORTS

Sport is a social institution that has gone through a period of tremendous change regarding gender. Title IX increased the presence and profile of female athletes, women?s professional sports leagues have become established and continuous entities, and a number of female athletes have achieved household recognition. Yet, despite these advancements women?s sports continue to suffer from a number of barriers: backlash against Title IX, continued sexualization and trivialization of female athletes and women?s sports; and significant differences in the financial and fan support of male and female athletics.

Therefore this session seeks to query, in conjunction with the conference theme, the role of sport as a social institution in generating a more equal society regarding gender relations. We seek papers that address the following questions either generally or as a part of a more grounded empirical study: In what ways has sport provided a powerful setting for articulating alternative conceptions of the distribution of power via gender? In what ways does it reinforce existing power arrangements? What are the possibilities and problems of attempts to generate social change via sport? How does sport compare to other institutions characterized by stalled revolutions (e.g. work, family)?

If you would like your paper considered for this session, please submit the following to Kylie Parrotta () and Daniel Buffington () by Wednesday, October 15:

1) the title of the paper

2) name, affiliation, and contact information for each author

3) an extended abstract of approximately 450-550 words

***note that at least one author on each paper must be a member of SSS for the paper to be considered (per SSS)

Deadline for submission: 1st October 2015

Ultras are the most prominent form of football fandom in the 21st century. From their origins in Italy in the 1960s, this style of fandom has spread across Europe and then across the globe. This special edition seeks to bring together new research and theoretically informed papers to contribute to an understanding of the ultras phenomenon and establish a foundation for future scholarship on this form of fandom. This Special Issue invites papers that can contribute to new research agendas on ultras fandom.

30-31 July 2015 THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPORT AND SOCIETY

Toronto, Canada
University of Toronto
30-31 July 2015

Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, posters or colloquia are invited for the Sixth International Conference on Sport and Society being held at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, from 30-31 July 2015. We welcome proposals from a variety of disciplines and perspectives that will contribute to the conference discourse. We also encourage faculty and research students to submit joint proposals for paper presentations or colloquia.

2015 CONFERENCE SPECIAL FOCUS:

“Sport in the Americas”

This year’s conference will be held in parallel with the Pan-American Games. Often, “America” is taken to mean the United States, to the neglect of the other countries represented at the games. Accordingly, in addition to the general, international themes for the conference, this year’s area of special focus relates to the rise and development of sport in the Americas, with a particular focus on the Caribbean states, South America, and Central America. This is an under-researched area, which deserves deeper investigation. The Pan-American Games are in Toronto at the same time as the Sport and Society Conference, bringing people from the whole of the Americas to a single event. This provides an opportunity to open up to the rest of the academic world to the vast array of research that is being undertaken by scholars of sport in the Caribbean, South America, and Central America.

CONFERENCE THEMES:

Proposals are invited that address sport through one of the following categories:

Theme 1: Sporting Cultures and Identities
Theme 2: Sport and Health
Theme 3: Sports Education
Theme 4: Sports Management and Commercialization
2015 Special Focus: Sport in the Americas

Presenters may also choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed Sport Collection of journals. If you are unable to attend the conference, you may still become a member of the community and submit your article for peer review and possible publication, upload an online presentation, and enjoy subscriber access to the journal.

Proposals for in-person presentations should be submitted by 9 APRIL 2015 (title and short abstract). Proposals submitted after this day will be accommodated in non-themed sessions at the conference or are eligible for community membership registrations (no attendance at conference required with community membership presentations).

5-6 June, 2015, ETH Zurich

CFP: Conference on Sport and Society in Transnational Contexts, 5-6 June, 2015, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Sport and Society in Transnational Contexts Over the years, academics have widely discussed and written about the critical influence of sports on social formations. Although in most of the works sport has been situated in national/local contexts, the existing and increasing global dynamics of sport have not gone unnoticed. During the 1970s, scholars began thinking about international diffusion of Western sports, and gradually concepts such as sportization, mundialization, Americanization or American capitalist hegemony, and modernization started doing rounds in sport academia. Subsequently scholars pondered looking beyond frameworks of cultural hegemony and explored diffusion and appropriation as interdependent processes ? complex ?local?global nexuses? that tend to produce hybrid sport and broader cultural codes. Quite possibly, sport has become ?so central to our contemporary moment?s blend of transnational cultural industrialisation and textualisation that it does more than reflect the global ? sport is big enough to modify our very use of the term, ?globalization?? (Miller et al., 2001). This is reflected in the recent works on global networks of sport that embrace cultural transfer, sponsorship, migration, mega-event, fandom and media among other issues. This conference aims to bring together academics from a wide range of disciplines to expand our conceptual understanding of sport?s international dimensions, particularly the flows and circulations of historical processes at the sites of production and consumption within a connected space of interaction. We invite papers which focus on, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  1. The functions of nation-states and other establishments in initiating and mediating sport codes.
  2. New models of analyzing circulation and appropriation of particular sports.
  3. The agency of intermediary individuals within or outside institutions that promote transnational sport.
  4. The processes of recasting sporting discourses through visual and textual constructions.
  5. Transformation of sport through transactions between dispensers and absorbers.
  6. Simultaneous multiple production of modern sport across diverse sites, and subsequent configuration of their contemporary forms.

The conference committee welcomes abstracts of 200-250 words for 20 minute presentations. Please send your abstract and a brief biography (not more than 200 words) to Souvik Naha at by 31 October 2014. Female and early career researchers are particularly encouraged to participate. We do not guarantee travel and accommodation bursaries at this stage. Registration information will follow once we learn the outcomes of funding applications. The conference proceedings will be published as a special issue of Sport in Society in 2016.

06.11.2014 CFP: Junior Colloquium (CIERA): Diversity and Identification mechanisms. Football and Diversity in France and Germany 1950-2014

Junior Colloquium (CIERA): Diversity and Identification mechanisms. Football and Diversity in France and Germany 1950-2014 Since it became an object of mass culture in the 1920s, football has constantly faced the issues of diversity and identity in France and Germany. Exploring positions held and parts played by foreigners and /or nationals with an immigration background in football as a sport activity and an entertainment industry appears very productive in a French-German context, especially because on both sides of the Rhine the respective definition of the Nation was founded on divergent principles. The Colloquium will be structured in two sections. Section 1 will be focussed on diversity in professional football as covered by the media. Section 2 will adress the questions concerning diversity in amateur football. This Junior Colloquium aims to arouse the interest of PhD students, Post-doc Students or Master Students focussing their research on immigrants culture and sport culture (football) in France and/or in Germany. 07.11.-10.11.2014 2nd Global Conference Fandom: Practices and Participatory Cultures Prague, Czech Republic

Call for Presentations: The words ‘fan’ and ‘fandom’ often conjure up images of screaming groupies, sports supporters adorned in the colours of ‘their’ team, die-hard messageboard participants and even stalkers who perpetrate actual violence against the object of their fannish desires. Whether viewed as a positive or negative cultural force, fandoms represent participatory communities that are so thoroughly inscribed within our social fabric, and integral to the way many individuals understand their identity, that it warrants holistic study in an interdisciplinary context.
